Fair Trade, purchased directly from a group of women’s cooperatives in southwest Morocco.
Your purchase of our argan oil helps rural Moroccan women to improve their lives and fosters their independence. We purchase directly from a group of 6 women’s community cooperatives, ensuring that more of the proceeds go directly to the women and their families. Membership in each of the 6 cooperatives ranges from about 25 to 60 women, with an average of about 35.
To produce argan oil, the argan tree fruit is gathered and dried to remove the fruit pulp, revealing a hard-shelled nut. The nut is cracked by hand, by placing the nut on a flat rock and hitting the nut with another rock. Each nut contains several kernels that are cold-pressed to extract the oil. Cracking the argan nut is the most laborious step in argan oil production: a full day's work produces enough kernels to produce one liter of oil.
